Let’s be honest: some of the symptoms that come with perimenopause, like hot flashes, are just plain frustrating. One minute you’re fine, the next you’re flushed, sweaty, and peeling off layers while everyone else seems perfectly comfortable. While the long-term solution may lie in balancing hormones, many women need immediate relief now. So, how do we reclaim comfort in the moment?
How do we short-circuit a hot flash? Here are a few quick and effective tools that help cool your body and soothe your nervous system in real-time.

Know Your Triggers
Before you can avoid hot flashes, you have to understand what sets them off. For some women, it’s caffeine. For others, it’s alcohol, sugar, spicy food, or stress. Keep a journal or use a tracking app to take note of what you ate, drank, or experienced leading up to a hot flash. The more awareness you bring to your personal patterns, the more empowered you are to prevent unnecessary discomfort.
Of course, not every trigger can be avoided (hello, daily stress!), which is why having a few go-to tools in your back pocket is essential.
Here Are My Favorite Ways to Shorten or Soften a Hot Flash:
The Tried-and-True Neck Fan
A compact, rechargeable neck fan can be a game changer. Keep one in your purse, in your car, or at your desk. These fans provide direct airflow to the neck and face, which are key cooling zones for your body. Instant relief, without anyone around you needing to know what’s going on.
Cool, Mint-Infused Water
Hydration is key during perimenopause, especially when hot flashes are in the picture. A glass of ice-cold water infused with mint not only helps cool you from the inside out, but the refreshing scent of mint has been shown to calm the nervous system. Keep a pitcher in your fridge and bring a thermos with you when you’re on the go.

Strategic Cold Packs
Targeted cooling can dramatically cut down the duration of a hot flash. Placing a cold pack (or even a wrapped ice pack) between your thighs or under your arms cools large arteries, bringing your core temperature down fast. These areas are highly vascular and help regulate body temperature quickly when cooled.
Scented Cold Washcloths
Keep a small stack of damp washcloths in your fridge, infused with a few drops of essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, or lavender. Or, for a magical touch, try “charged scents” from Nui Cobalt Designs. I’m all about multitasking, and these not only cool your skin but combat that peculiar body odor that sometimes tags along with a hot flash. It’s a little self-care ritual that hits all the senses and leaves you feeling refreshed and grounded.

Deep Breathing
Stress is one of the top triggers for hot flashes, and it’s sneaky—sometimes we don’t realize how tense we are until a flash hits. Practicing deep breathing calms your sympathetic nervous system, slows your heart rate, and can even help reverse a hot flash in progress. Try this: inhale for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four. (This is known as box breathing, and it’s beautifully grounding.)
Have a Snack with Plant Estrogens
Foods rich in phytoestrogens—like flax seeds, sesame seeds, or edamame—may help moderate the frequency and intensity of hot flashes. These compounds mimic estrogen and can bind to estrogen receptors in the body. While they’re not a substitute for hormone therapy, incorporating them into your diet is a gentle and natural way to support your hormonal balance. A quick flaxseed smoothie or a handful of roasted edamame might make more of a difference than you expect.
Final Thoughts: The Power of Preparation
Hot flashes can feel overwhelming in the moment, but with a few simple tools and rituals, they don’t have to hijack your day. Knowing your triggers, staying hydrated, and leaning into both physical and emotional self-care can dramatically improve how you move through these moments.
And remember—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to perimenopause. Your body is speaking to you in its own unique language. The more you listen, the more you learn. Trust the wise woman within. She knows what she needs.
